8/17/09 Casco Bay, Portland, ME

Today we took a Lucky Catch Lobstering Cruise. . . we saw old forts, lighthouses, as well as beautiful scenery. Captain Tom was an excellent guide and teacher. We were shown how to tell male from female lobsters, how to measure for a legal keeper, how to check if a female has been marked as one who is a mother (or lays eggs), how to mark one if a female has eggs and has not yet been marked. A mother lobster may never be caught and must be tossed back. There were a number of children on the boat and Tom spent lots of time teaching them how to prepare the lobster bait, how to pull the traps to the surface, how to grab the crabs that wandered into the trap and toss them back, etc, etc, etc.

We bought four of the live lobsters and walked them next door to a restaurant where they were cooked. What a feast!!!

There are still some cobblestone streets in Portland, ME
